And We’re Back…

Thanks everyone for sticking with Blown Mortgage through my brief respite in Mexico. I’m refreshed and reinvigorated, ready to take Blown Mortgage to another level of (hopefully) useful and colorful commentary on the mortgage morass.

A couple of quick off-topic notes.

1. Fly Virgin America if you can. Highly recommend. Best travel experience to-date. They get it and blow others away. JetBlue, Southwest? Forget it. Virgin America is amazing.

2. I’m not going on another cruise – ever. Never was a big fan of cruises for a variety of reasons and while the cruise was pleasant I’m embarrassed that I patronized a company that requires its workers to work 7-days a week 11-14 hour days for ridiculously low wages with little to no chance of promotion while charging insane markups on internet and phone to keep in-touch with distant family members. Maybe reading Andrew Carnegie’s biography at the same time didn’t help; but I couldn’t help but think of the word “exploitation.” I’ll probably have more to say on this.

3. Talk about specuvesting – Cabo San Lucas is a poster-child. Talk about a coast-line of over-built, half-built condo buildings and you get the picture. So many unfinished with no signs of life. If you could find a loan you could probably start snapping up some bargains in Cabo. On the other-hand, give it another 6-12 months to let the pain set in; then take a look.

I have to agree with you on Cabo. I went there on a cruise about 14 years ago. It was a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle and just relax. there were a few bars, few homes, and possibly 2 hotels.

Fast forward 5 years later when returned on another cruise and we found that dozens of hotels were being built and you couldn't exit the tender without being asked to buy a water taxi and some drugs by at least 5 people before you got to the end of the pier. It went from a vacation spot to a tourist trap. I have no desire to return to Cabo again.
  • great point on the drugs carl. i got solicited 3 times within 5 minutes with "do you want to get high?" "want some blow?" etc. are you kidding me? i'm with my wife, kid and grandma - seriously? i was like get me the F out of here, immediately.
  • Okay, Morgan, here's another perspective on the cruise employment issue. I adopted two kids from Haiti. The average income that a Haitian makes is $200 and they live in a "hut" with a dirt floor, no utilities, and virtually no food. Compared to that, I think that what a cruise ship worker makes and the income they make, it's pretty good. The majority of the countries that were represented on the ships I've been on are ones that have standards of living only slightly better than Haiti.

    It's all relative.

1)Not a big fan of cruises now that I have a teenage daughter who as most teenagers today looks older than what she is and is quite attractive..I don't need an issue over international waters with workers on the cruise or outside the USA..Natalie Hollaway was a wake up call ..

2)Not a big fan of Mexico as is..many years ago it was a great place to hang and have fun..today..I think you take your risks by going there...many other fun and cheap places travel too..Love the DR..much safer, great food and filled with Europeans and Americans..living, retiring and investing their dollars...including the building of Mr. Trumps new resorts...

3)Haven't tried Virgin America but will take recommendation in stride...

Glad you had a good time..we all need a vacation...
  • Interesting post. I have just bookmarked this at stumbleupon. Others no doubt will like it like I did.
