Morgan - it is unfortunate that we did not have more people with your level-headed manner back in the boom times. Maybe it could have helped avoid the bust times.
Anyone that makes comments about hacking it is simply envious because they have not yet achieved what you have. I know I got out about 2 months ago after 10+ years, and I hear the same stuff. Fact is, I was never in it to prove anything to anyone, and I really doubt that you were either. Take care of your family, and take care of your own mental health. Get out there and kick ass!

Jeff..I think that you are correct in your observations when it comes to overall business practices.. however, I don' think that your advice works for the current situation in the mortgage business..

The industry itself is under dramatic change..that not matter how hard you strive to achieve your millions of success dollars..it won't happen..simply because the changes are beyond anyone's control..you cannot control your destiny in this business right now...you can buckle down, reduce expenses, put in crazy hours, cold call to death and understand that in the end the good old days are gone..probably never to be repeated in our lifetime...this business will weed out 90% of the brokers and shops out there..and the ones that do survive..will do just that..make enough to survive..the days of really big big money are over...

Morgan, you made the right choice to accept and move on..sadly many will be claiming BK, moving back in with parents, and losing their homes and lifestyles simply because they did not accept reality...

Congratulations Morgan! I can appreciate what you have done. I myself have been in the mortgage industry for over 14 years. I am owner of JPayne Mortgage (www.jpaynemortgage.com) in Dallas, Texas. In recent years I have had the privilege of making a difference in a totally different way than I would have scripted. In addition to my mortgage company I now coach and train business owners on what it means to be a part of the "new economy."

My own observations are most loan officers, processors, underwriters, title providers, etc. are caught asleep. Business is not the same as it was five years ago let alone a year ago. It will never be the same!

Like in the movie The Matrix. It was asked do you want to swallow the "blue pill" or the "red pill?" The blue pill you will stay in the matrix. In other words you will be in a coma. The red pill however meant you would face reality and you would create your own destiny.

I believe most people in the mortgage industry don't want to face reality. They want to in the matrix. They are in their own coma. You can observe this in many people. In Dallas just drive down the interstate and look at people. You will observe most in a daze. Just letting life happen.

Today we live in a new economy. Business as usual is extinct. I know many think this is an aberration and things will return to normal. What is normal? Today you must be distinct or you will be extinct. For those who wish to swallow the "red pill" and face reality, I have a few suggestions for survival:

1. Think like an entrepreneur. What value do you offer? Is it real value? If you think you provide "good service" and that's your value. You will be extinct. We are in the information age. Think about it. Good service is an expectation. What do you know that I need to know? Your customer is asking the same thing! Think like an owner not an employee.

2. Embrace failure. Don't let your failures dictate your future. If you are hurting now because you are unprepared for the changes taking place right now. Change your destiny. Learn from your mistakes and transform yourself. Read, read, read. Start with Love is The Killer App by Tim Sanders. Then read Mr. Shmooze (bad title good story), then read Permission Marketing by Seth Godin, then read The Fall Advertising and Rise of PR by Al Ries, then read anything Donald Trump writes especially his latest, then read High Trust Selling by Todd Duncan. The fact is if you are not reading your brain has atrophied and you are dieing. It's been said get on living or get on dieing. Learn from your failures and move on. You will have more failures, thats okay as long as you know what to do with them.

3. Master productivity --- The reason most will not win in the new economy they don't know how to compete. There are 22 year old kids who are kicking the butts of people 35 and older. Why? They know the tools of the new economy. They are not waiting their turn for the gold watch. You have kids in their 20's making millions because they didn't know they were supposed to wait in line for their turn. They know how to handle information and they know what to do with it --- quickly.

4. Embrace change --- It is here and it is here to stay. Will you change? Hard? Yes. It's like Thomas Edison said, "Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.?

I congratulate you Morgan. You are a product of the new economy. You are distinct and therefore you will not be extinct. You are Morgan, Inc. When you view yourself as the boss of your own show then you can create a masterpiece. When you feel others are to blame, or you are shocked at what is happening you are the one at fault.

Sorry for my rambiling. If you would like to be a part of my blog feel free to visit my new company: www.ascendworks.com. Our goal is to make a difference. I do so by my own experience. Thanks Morgan for your insight and your passion. I look forward to someday meeting you.
