News out friday was that the fed was accepting any AAA paper at the discount window (yes it includes MBS). It didn't get much coverage, I'm sure they didn't want to be perceived as "bailing out" anyone. Now they can get 30 money at 5.75% to lend at 8.5%, not too bad.

Can the Fed take jumbo-based MBS as collateral for borrowing at the discount window? Or do they only take agency? It looks like they take both, but I'm not an expert in that arena.

Is it possible that if they take jumbo product as collateral at the discount window these banks are simply relying on the discount window to finance jumbo lending?

Anyone?

Could it be that the forward commitments on alt-a purchases freed up money for jumbo loans held on portfolio that would have originally been reserved for alt-a products?

In the spirirt of democracy and a good saturday round table discussion, what is your view on the proposed bailout plans that the presidential candidates have been discussing?

I'm with I-Man. FHLMC can't buy jumbos by definition. You know, that whole conforming loan limit thingy.

But did Freddie agree to Jumbos? I don't think so. That press release seemed to be all about Alt-A. Am I missing something?

Thanks Ravi - I actually received a copy of that press release Tanta received, but forgot all about it and didn't put two and two together. Thanks for the refresher! For those of you looking for Ravi's link - just click his name and it will take you to Tanta's post.

Based on the Calculated Risk post I linked, I'd guess that some lenders finished negotiating their terms for forward purchases with Freddie Mac.
